BOOKS ABOUT HIKING · BOOKS ABOUT HIKING IN YORKSHIRE

For some people, their love of hiking might have started on a family day out or during a week spent in some idyllic location in the Yorkshire countryside. Many will have been doing it for so long now that it becomes difficult to remember a time when they haven’t been putting on their boots and walking for miles in the wild outdoors.

Whatever the case, one thing is certain: People go hiking for only one reason, and that is to enjoy everything that Mother Nature has to offer.

You can always recognise a first time hiker the minute you see him or her approach, hobbling along with at least 50 pounds on their back, a pair of running shoes, and all sorts of equipment which they believe might just come in handy during their trip.

It often makes an amusing picture,  but it's true for almost every hardened hiking veteran out there the first time they themselves started hiking. But don't worry - if you’re one of the newbies to hiking, it won’t take long for you to put some miles on your boots and as time goes by, you’ll find yourself gaining in experience along the way. In the meantime, here are some hiking tips and advice to help make your hiking trips as enjoyable as possible.

ENJOY YOURSELF

Of course, this is what hiking is all about. Sure, there are a number of reasons why you put on those boots, but in the end, it all boils down to one thing – personal enjoyment. Without that, then it’s simply not worth it. Who wants to endure the hardships of hiking when all they get out of it are countless bug bites and perhaps a few scratches here and there? If hiking wasn’t enjoyable then why would anyone even bother?

So take this advice: enjoy yourself. Take your time. Watch a cloud form. Breathe in the fresh air of the countryside around you. The number one rule is absolutely "No Stress." Breaking that rule is not an option.

PREPARE IN ADVANCE

Just because hiking is an enjoyable leisure activity doesn’t mean that you can forget about your personal safety altogether. Remember: this is the outdoors and anything could happen. Lack of preparation is the cause of many countryside disasters and near-misses. Inadequate clothing, lack of route-finding ability, bad judgment calls – all of these have at some time led to life-threatening situations in hiking.

The best way to be prepared while hiking is by learning about the conditions you’re likely to face. Once you have, formulate a way to deal with any eventuality and pack accordingly. You might perhaps consider making enquiries with relevant National Park Authorities who will be able to offer you valuable advice on local conditions and procedures.

KNOW YOUR EQUIPMENT

Knowing your equipment is always a good idea because it may well be called upon to save your life one day.
