NEWS FROM KNARESBOROUGH
Knaresborough is one of the
most picturesque towns in North Yorkshire occupying a position
overlooking the river Nidd. The town has a long and colourful
history which is enlivened by myth, mystery and folklore. It has
plenty of attractions to offer its visitors. Standing atop a rocky
outcrop some 120 feet high are the remains of Knaresborough castle,
originally built by the Normans but later rebuilt in the 14th century
from when the remains date. Crossing
the river is a splendid viaduct standing 90ft high and extending for 338
feet, it was completed in 1851. Three years earlier, the original
viaduct was almost nearing completion when it collapsed and completely
damned the river.
Knaresborough
is the legendary 15th century birthplace of Mother Shipton, the famous
witch and prophetess. The wooded riverside estate also includes
the Petrifying Well where objects are turned to stone and the Wishing
Well situated behind it which is fed by the same magical waters as the
Petrifying Well and which has been wished in since 1630 when the park
was opened.
