SUTTON BANK
NORTH YORKSHIRE
Sutton
Bank, or more precisely, Roulston Scar, is the home of the Kilburn White
Horse, which at some 318 feet long and 220 feet high, is visible for
miles around. Overlooking the village of Kilburn, the White Horse,
carved into the hill side, was completed in 1857 by local schoolmaster
John Hodgson. During the Second World War the horse was covered to
prevent it becoming a conspicuous navigational landmark for enemy
bombers and was not uncovered again until 1946.
Sutton
Bank, located on the A170 Thirsk to Scarborough road, offers extensive
views across the Vale of York and the Vale of Mowbray and the site
itself is one of the most important prehistoric monuments in the region:
a massive hillfort built around 400BC. It is also the home of the
Yorkshire Gliding Club.
