Once the home of the 18th century explorer and voyager, Captain James Cook and also the main whaling port for Northern England, Whitby is today a thriving Yorkshire holiday resort.

The skyline of Whitby is dominated by the ruins of Whitby Abbey which stands high up on the east cliff. The famous 199 steps leading from the old town take you up to the church of St. Mary, one of the finest Anglo-Saxon churches in the country, the graveyard of which gave Bram Stoker the inspiration for his book Dracula.
