INDIAN CRICKETERS PLAY
IN THE DALES
Grassington, May
16, 2006
Young
cricketers from India will be paying a visit to the Yorkshire Dales
National Park on Friday (May 19) to have a walk around, watch some
peregrine falcons and play a match.
An
Under-14s side from Delhi will be taking on a team from Settle Cricket
Club in a 20-over friendly organised by the Yorkshire Dales National
Park Authority (YDNPA) and Bradford Council.
But
first they will stop off at Malham Cove where they will have a chance to
visit the YDNPA/RSPB Falcon Watch site and use high-powered telescopes
to watch a pair of nesting peregrine falcons.
After
that they will do a short walk round the area before going off to
GiggleswickSchool to play against Settle Cricket Club juniors who are
part of the Beyond the Boundary initiative – an action research
project funded by the Countryside Agency as part of its Diversity Review
project.
The
project, which started three years ago, aims to increase awareness of
and visits to the National Park within the Asian communities in Bradford
by organising six cricket matches a year in the Dales and in the city.
The initiative is being run with help from the Council.
Relationships
should develop between the two sets of communities that are maintained
beyond the life of the project funding.
Catherine
Kemp, the YDNPA’s Outreach Officer, said: “We are really pleased
that this young team is coming into the Yorkshire Dales during their
visit to the UK. They will help to strengthen the links between the
cricket clubs involved in the Beyond the Boundary project."
Taj
Butt, Bradford Council’s link officer for Beyond the Boundary, said:
“The visit came about because of links between Manningham Cricket
Centre in Bradford and the Delhi team. We went over there and played a
few matches and invited them to send a team over here. They will be
staying in Bradford and playing against various teams.
“Being
able to take them into the National Park and to play a Dales team
already involved in the project is an added bonus.”
