FROM THE YORKSHIRE DALES NATIONAL PARK AUTHORITY NEWSDESK RED SQUIRREL AFTERNOONGrassington, May 16, 2006 Red squirrel conservation in the Yorkshire Dales will be highlighted at a special event next week. The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) and the Forestry Commission have organised an open afternoon on Wednesday 24 May for local people to find out about red squirrel conservation and management work in the Hawes area around the Widdale red squirrel refuge. Ian Court, the YDNPA’s Wildlife Conservation Officer, said: “The event is primarily intended for local landowners and residents in the Hawes area to come along and find out more information from Forestry Commission and National Park staff about woodland management and grant aid for red squirrel conservation. “There will also be demonstrations by a Forestry Commission Ranger on grey squirrel control.” Matt Neale, YDNPA Area Ranger for Upper Wensleydale, which covers the Hawes area, said: “We don’t know exactly how many red squirrels there are in the National Park so we will be taking the opportunity to explain to local residents how they can help by reporting sightings. We can also show them how to encourage reds squirrels through supplementary feeding.” The event at the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes runs between 1.00 pm and 6.30 pm on Wednesday and other activities will include demonstrations for landowners on grey squirrel control at 2.00 pm, 3.30 pm and 5.30pm.
