YORKSHIRE DALES NATIONAL PARK JOINS CELEBRATION

Grassington, May 31, 2006

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) is playing a part in a special celebration of the Cumbrian landscape being held in Sedbergh this weekend (2-4 June).

The Flora of the Fells Book Festival will bring together a group of writers exploring all aspect of the fell landscapes, some of which are within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The book festival has been funded by the Sustainable Development Fund, which is grant-aided by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs through the YDNPA. The Fund is managed on the Authority’s behalf by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust.

The festival will be launched by local conservationist Sir Martin Holdgate in the Queens Hall at SedberghSchool at 7.30pm.

In a special event on Saturday evening at 7.30pm, mountaineer Doug Scott will be presented with a lifetime achievement award for his work for the outdoors by the Outdoor Writer’s Guild.

As well as talks by a variety of writers during the event, there will also be a number of walks and activities for those who enjoy the fells.

The Yorkshire Dales Society, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, is providing special transport arrangements to the event.

The book festival is part of the Flora of the Fells Festival 2006 which, in turn, is part of the Flora of the Fells Project, an initiative funded by Friends of the Lake District, English Nature and Defra.

The project aims to promote greater understanding of the importance of the habitats and landscapes of the upland areas in the region, some of which are of national or international importance and which need to be carefully managed if they are to be sustained in the future.

For tickets and more information about events in the festival and the other work of the project visit www.floraofthefells.com or call the Dales and Lakes Book Centre on 015396 20125.
